Our tough little man.

For those of you who might have noticed a lack of posting over the last few days the above image says it all. Our poor little love bug got sick Friday after his first pediatrician's appointment. He had a temperature of 102.1 and we had to take him to the emergency room at midnight that night. It was one of the scariest things I've ever experienced. He broke out in a rash right when we got there and they immediately began x-rays and tests.

We spent the next two and a half days in the hospital where poor Zachary was put through so much. There were 16 failed attempts (stabs) to get an IV in him. It literally became a contest to see what nurse could finally do it and a social worker even got involved. Then there were three failed lumbar punctures. That's 9 needles into his spine for no reason. He's one tough little man though. One doctor asked if we were sure he wasn't from the planet Krypton.

Needless to say the last few days have been very difficult. No one should have to go through that with a 2 week old. Thankfully (and I truly mean that) we are home now with a healthy boy and that is all that matters.

We were in the hospital on Sunday for my birthday and his daddy's first Father's Day. Here is a little camera phone portrait of me and my baby boy on my (not-so-happy) 26th birthday:

He's the best present in the whole world!!

Now I'd love to try to find a way to not be at Kaiser every other day. Fingers crossed for smoother sailing from here on out.

One tough little man.
One tough incredible new Mommy.
One really supportive, sweet-but-tough-when-he-needed-to-be (with Kaiser personnel) new Daddy.
It will be a weekend / birthday / Father's Day to remember, if not fondly.

I'm so so sorry you all went through this. It is the hardest thing in the world. My little guy went through something very similar and the good news is that he has no idea. So even though it will be something you remember forever, it won't be anything he does. He just showed you what a tough guy he is. Big hugs!

Ooooh nooo! That's the worst thing ever! It broke my heart to hear about such a tiny thing getting LUMBAR punctures!
I'm so glad that he's doing alright now and here's to less bumps!
