Zachary is a BIG fan of the Fresh Beat Band. He LOVES them. It is the only show he watches and he knows and does all of the dance moves and sings along to certain parts. In fact we have seen it so much that we all know the words and dance moves at this point. Sometimes I wish my brain wasn't filled with their music all day long.

I put some of their songs on our iPod and let him listen to them on my headphones the other day. He is either dancing like a maniac, spinning with joy, or zoning out when he hears them. Apparently this day he was in more of a zoning out mood. I took a little bit of video of him that hopefully one day I will have time to put together.
I have had this shoot planned since Zachary was like 6 months. Man, it feels good when you finally put an idea into practice. Even if it doesn't work out how you envisioned it it's nice to get that idea out of your head and make room for new ones. I am one of those people who has too many ideas. Notebooks and notebooks filled with them. The hard part is picking which ones to act on and quieting the others for a moment. Anyone else have this problem?

Anyways, we couldn't figure out what to make Zachary for Halloween. Anyone with a toddler knows that anything with a hat or glasses just wasn't going to happen. And most of our ideas involved a hat or glasses that would stay on his head for two seconds. Thankfully we just happened to have this adorable lion costume that was handed down to us (thanks Deana and Trip!). It was labeled 6-12 months so I didn't think there was a chance he would fit into it since he's into a 2T now (at 17 months). It was tight but it worked. And he kept it on. Hooray! I was just excited for the opportunity to finally do this little shoot.
And if you're wondering what he's looking at. I had to resort to putting on his favorite show to get him to sit for this. I forgot that I become pretty invisible when his buddies, the Fresh Beat Band, are on.
I'm still amazed he kept a hat on for more than 2 seconds. Amazed and very happy. Thanks mom for the adorable pumpkin hat!

I bought Zachary this jacket and immediately knew I had to find an "alley" to photograph him in it. Unfortunately, I forgot to take some with it unbuttoned since he has a pretty short window for pictures nowadays. His shirt says "seriously handsome" =) (from Carter's). His jacket is Target, pants Old Navy, and shoes are Converse.

And yes, I know it has been a while since I have posted. I do so many shoots and take so many pictures. I have gotten so backed up on blogging because of that and when I finally sit to do a blog I don't even know where to begin. It can be a bit overwhelming. But because I had to start sometime and with something, I started with these. Just because they make me smile.

Back in June, yes almost 3 months ago, we threw a little first birthday party for Zachary. It was Up! themed because it's pretty much the only time I will get to choose for him and I LOVE that movie. =) Plus I thought it would be appropriate with all of the balloons.

We had a lot going on the week of his party with a family member in the hospital and the death of part of our furry family so we deecided to move his party back a week last minute. You would think with the extra week that we would have been more prepared but we were up until 4am the night before painting the dollhouse, baking, etc. Ugh.. the dollhouse! I had a minor obsession with HAVING to have a dollhouse for the party to the point that when the one I ordered didn't come in time I drove 7 hours to Santa Rosa and back to buy one from a guy on Craigslist and stay up all night painting it to look like the Up! house. I had this vision of making cake-pops to have as balloons on top of the house (see above) and couldn't let it go. I realized about halfway through the drive how insane this was but I was already halfway to Crazytown and kept on the ride.

I printed and put together these cute 3D paper Russell and Carl from the Disney Family website.

I had my mom make her amazing chocolate chip cookies with M&M's instead to keep with the colorful theme. Mmm..

I made some very NEON cupcakes that did not turn out very good. No matter how many times someone tells me not to try a recipe for the first time at an event I never listen.

I took our mailbox and painted it white and we each put our handprints just like in the movie =)

We actually know an Ellie (a character in the movie) so when I saw her put her card in the mailbox I knew I had to get a picture.

I created a little My Adventure Book to use as a guestbook by painting an old photo album I thrifted to look like the one in the movie. I put some of my favorite pictures from the year, some Wilderness Explorer badges and some blank space for notes from guests.

For party favors for the kids I made little Wilderness Explorer kits. On the back they say "A wilderness explorer is a friend to all, be it plant or fish or tiny mole".

Each of the kits had their very own Adventure Activity Book (printed from Family Disney and sewn to bind), a magnifying glass, a whistle, bubbles, and crayons to color their books.

This little 3D house was printed from the Family Disney website as well with little cupcakes as balloons.

I found Zachary balloons at the party store and was pretty excited since, believe it or not, it's tough to find things with his name.

I photographed this beautiful little girl a few years ago when I started photographing children and just as she began modeling. I just adore her and her family! After our session I met them for coffee and they gave me the sweetest Christmas gift. I still display the beautiful ceramic owls in my office to this day. I still feel so touched that they thought of me. Kind gestures make my heart so happy. I just LOVE my job and the people I meet!!!

So, you can imagine my excitement when her mom emailed me about doing another session with not only her but her two boys who are now modeling as well! We even realized that our kids are with the same wonderful agency (JE Models). It was so great to get to spend such a fun day in downtown San Jose with them. Chloe has grown so much but is still the sweetest, silliest, little girl. She really is an amazing model and comes up with her own awesome poses and ideas too! She's been in several ads and even the cover of Disney Fun magazine (I still have a copy). I'm so proud of her and look forward to seeing her star grow even more.
I hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July! Even if you don't celebrate it, I hope you had a fantastic day! We spent the morning house hunting (I swear we are getting to close to having seen 100 houses now). Then Papa Bear had to go to work so Zachary and I headed to the park for a little bit before nap. And we got to see three fireworks our neighbors were setting off before bed. Pretty good day overall. What did you do?
Please excuse my disheveled hair and belt. We walked to the park in some very strong winds. Turns out my patriotic dress was a bad idea. (and an update)

I know, I know. It has been a LONG time since I have posted. We have been had quite busy the last few months and the internet hasn't been working on my laptop, which means it's impossible to blog.

A few updates on our lives currently:

- Zachary turned 1 on June 3rd! We had a small, Up! themed birthday party in our backyard (front of the invitation above. post on party and cake smash to come.)

And some Instagrams from his birthday:

-I turned 27 on June 19th. It was a wonderful day with flowers, free birthday coffee (thanks Starbucks!), cake pops, brunch and the park.
Some instagrams (@tenleyclark) from the day:

- We have been looking to buy a house for the last few months and it has been really tough. It is currently a very competitive market in the South Bay Area. Every house we go see already has 30 offers (some all cash). We finally found and got a house that we loved just to find out it had major problems during the inspection (huge crack in the foundation, etc). We had to walk away and even though it was tough we feel good about our decision. Now it's right back into the lion's den.

- We have to be out of our rental in 27 days so lots of packing.

- We said goodbye to Suzie (Dave's grandma)

It has been a sad time but we celebrate the wonderful lives they had full of love.

So, as you can see it has been quite an eventful few months. Not to mention all of the fun shoots I have done that I can't wait to share.

We spent the day eating a big homemade breakfast, finishing The Hunger Games (LOVED it!), opening Zachary's Easter "basket" and dying some eggs with Mimi. Well most of it was spent rocking the baby pleading with him to sleep but that's not as interesting.

Zachary and I had a bit of an adventure the other day going to take these pictures. I had read about this little spot not too far from me on Facebook and decided to check it out. It was part of a very nice housing community so we had to park in someone's spot to get to it. I told Zachary that we needed to be quick to make sure to get out before they got home. I take him out of his carseat then, slam both doors shut. I go to open the front door and.. you guessed it... locked. I have never locked my keys in my car before. I'm not overexaggerating when I say I have a bit of OCD about having my keys in hand before shutting a car door. I had put them down so I wouldn't poke Zack with them and didn't have pockets.

Not only were my keys in there but so was my phone, my wallet, everything. Thankfully a sweet older gentleman let me use his phone several times to call for help. Did I mention he was sweet? I'm pretty sure I owe him a batch of cookies on his doorstep. Thank goodness for him and for AAA being so awesome. And the owner of the house I parked in front of being so kind. After having to walk around in the cold, with Zack in my cardigan to keep him warm, I wasn't going to leave without my picture.

It was a bit chilly and the sun was setting but my boy is a trooper.

As I was taking his picture a sweet family came, tripod in tow, to take their own picture in the spot. The dad was so sweet and asked if I wanted a picture with Zachary. Even though I looked like a mess I'm glad I agreed. I love that last photo so much. Crazy hair and all.

It was a crazy adventure that I will always think of when I look at these images. I will be reminded by the kindness of strangers and remember to always pay it forward. Without that we may be all "Hunger Games", stranded and feasting on wildlife to survive.

What did you all do for Easter/Passover/Sunday? Have any of you read and fell in love with the Hunger Games too?Tenley Clarkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05693104988300734902noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5645542381962432818.post-73085928940836266592012-04-08T08:36:00.000-07:002012-04-08T08:36:03.437-07:00Project 52: Reflection

This week was my turn to pick the theme and I chose reflection. I know I should have chosen something Easter themed but I know not everyone celebrates it. Don't worry there is a post coming later with a little bunny love.

I took these images the other day when we were rained in. Zachary loves looking out and watching the rain with me but he loves his reflection even more. He's vain like that. He's pretty cute though so I don't blame him. I tell him if I looked like that I'd probably love mine too.
Our theme this week for Project 52 was absence of light, shadows, night. I had plans to do a little family portraits outside tonight but the rain had other plans. I was just thankful that it held out for my shoot today. So instead I just rounded up some fake candles (don't worry I did not let my baby play with fire-lit candles) that we had and let Zachary play. I would still love to do the family portrait I was planning so hopefully I will get a chance when the rain lets up.

I just joined a group with some wonderful women/photographers that I met through the Bloom Forum. It's a Project 52 where we take a picture every week based off of an overall topic. This was our topic was laughter. Normally this would be the perfect topic for me. I LOVE, I repeat LOVE, photographing laughter. This week however has been a rough one. I don't really want to get into details but we are going through a tough time at the moment so in case you were wondering why I have been posting less that has a lot to do with it. Sometimes life hits you with one thing after another. It really teaches you to stop saying "Could this be any worse?" Because it can. I said this once two weeks ago and ended up backwards on a freeway so I learned my lesson. Eventually there will be nowhere to go but up. So bring on the April showers. I will find the puddles to splash in until it stops and the rainbow appears.

As much as I try to teach Zachary everyday I should really take a lesson from him. That boy smiles through anything. His little baby giggles are infectious and can really brighten any rainy day!
Please check out Marsette Guerrero's beautiful portraits of laughter. The images of her son and dog are so beautiful: http://mdgphotographyonline.blogspot.com/2012/03/52-week-week-1-laughter.htmlTenley Clarkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05693104988300734902noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5645542381962432818.post-75292672457370113752012-03-18T21:35:00.000-07:002012-03-18T21:35:43.209-07:00If you're a bird I'm a bird.

We have been having such rainy, cold weather here. After 3 months of Zachary being sick I am eager to get out of this house. Today I was on my workshop in the Bloom forum and we had an assignment to try out different lighting than we are used to. Zachary was climbing all over this vintage suitcase his grandma got me that I carry props to my shoots in. the sun looked like it was breaking through the clouds finally, so I swooped him up, threw on a sweater and rainout of the house to chase the light and play. Well, by the time we got to the location it had gone back to hibernating behind the clouds. I happen to love shooting in overcast light so still began shooting. It was freezing. He as hungry and tired. He hates hats. There was goose poo everywhere and he kept falling over. What was I thinking? Needless to say it didnt last long. This is what we got while there:
Reminds me of the Notebook a little. I had no idea there would be so many geese. Pretty cool! I was nervous one would attack him so we stayed a little bit away at all times.Tenley Clarkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05693104988300734902noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5645542381962432818.post-4720773944849030752012-03-17T13:33:00.000-07:002012-03-17T13:33:37.942-07:00Happy St. Patrick's Day!

PS. Sorry for the lack of posts recently. We are looking for a new place to call home. I couldn't believe that something this beautiful was right there under my nose, in the middle of the suburbs, and I never knew about it. Living in the South Bay Area there just isn't a lot of pretty landscapes so I definitely got very excited. I jumped in the car with Baby Bear and drove out to take a look. Plus, it was a good excuse to surprise Daddy at work. I must say it was absolutely breathtaking. I didn't want to leave. And Zachary was loving trying to eat leaves and flowers. It was one of those moments where you feel like real life almost matches the magic of your imagination.
It's still magical though. I already have a few shoots planned for this area while it's still this way. I may even just take Zachary out there to have a picnic and play. Or art journal in the middle of the field where no one can see you. Wouldn't that be wonderful? Thanks Tasha for the tip!
I hope you all had a fabulous Leap Day! Happy Birthday to my sister-in-law Leah today! She is quite literally the sweetest woman I know. So much so that I use her name as noun for someone sweet as can be and amazing in every way (it's true!). Or at least no one I know has heard about it. Once we had Zachary I knew I had to buy it for him and he already loves it. Mostly because of my silly old-time Boston accent and monkey noises I do. I however love it for the gorgeous color palette. It's swoon worthy for sure. I just had to do a little photoshoot inspired by it's beauty with my beautiful boy.

Here are some of the 365 pictures I took of Zachary back in November that I haven't shared yet:

November is Dave's birthday so he got to celebrate his first birthday as a daddy! We went out to a comedy show with our friends and Pop-pop watched Baby Bear. My dad HATES having his picture taken and ducks out of every shot I try to take so that picture of him with Zack asleep on him is very special to me. I love those two lots and lots and they love each other lots and lots. Melts my heart!
The second image is his cousin Sophie very sweetly reading him Time For Bed on Skype. It's probably an understatement to say I have a heart addiction. Sounds like something I need treatment for. Maybe I do. Nevertheless, I love hearts! This is one of the reasons that I love Valentine's Day so much! I get to binge on hearts all month long and not be judged as if I think am living in a Disney movie. Ok, maybe people still do but I have a pretty good excuse to let my love for hearts hang out there like a plumber's crack. I was free to wear my heart on my sleeve, in my hair, on my feet, and in my tummy.

Since I couldn't buy Zachary chocolate-shaped hearts I decided to make all of his purees for the month heart-shaped. I'm not sure I'll be able to stop. Holidays make me want to bake lots and eat horrible-for-you delicious foods.

Sometimes I swear I like the time leading up to holidays more than the holidays themselves. Decorating, crafting, shopping and baking/eating treats to prepare is the fun part. As I said in the previous post our actual Valentine's Day was actually pretty awful. Alas, I still love it. I think all the anticipation of the prep makes you so excited that you will be a little disappointed no matter what. I'm always bummed when the actual day arrives because that means no more month-long celebration. Anyone else?

We did a fun little photoshoot on Valentine's Day (a little family tradition for the past 3 years). We decided last second to actually do it that day (as we were a little cranky and, as always, sleep-deprived). I whipped up a bow, two arrows and wings in like 15 minutes. The bow was made from a wire hanger and yarn. The arrows were made from construction paper and cake pop sticks. And the wings were made from cardboard from a t-shirt box, white paint, and yarn. I know. I could totally teach Janky Crafts 101.
I hope you enjoyed our silly little love fest! I also hope you all had a great Valentine's Day. And if not, hooray! It's over!

I spent the night throwing up and having my Mom over to watch Zachary (thanks Lady!) so it wasn't great but we made up for it by taking a baby to a fancy dinner this weekend. While he's in his shrieking at the top of his lungs phase. Ya, not the best idea. Delicious food though!
This week I chose to do a quote/song title from one of my favorite movies Enchanted since I'm feeling the Valentine's love. Now I'm feeling the need to watch it. I would probably fall asleep five seconds in anyways. That's what I'm off to do now. Well, hopefully. I'm not sure we slept more than like two hours combined last night with the poor guy up all night with teething/something pain. Wish us luck.

What are you guys doing to celebrate Valentine's Day? Or to un-celebrate it?Tenley Clarkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05693104988300734902noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5645542381962432818.post-53037545671862959282012-02-09T23:47:00.000-08:002012-02-09T23:47:54.737-08:00Guide to Making Your Own Baby Food.

Hello lovely readers! I thought I would put together a little post about making your own baby food since so many of you are new mothers. Don't have kids? Well you could be like Jessica Seinfeld and use purees to make your own meals even healthier.

I get a lot of questions from people about what making your own baby food entails. It seems most people think it sounds like a lot of work and so mystifying that they don't give it a second thought. I'm here to hopefully take a little bit of the mystery out of it and tell you how EASY it is. Not only easy but I actually think it's FUN! This is coming from a fast food junkie who never used to like to cook and HATED chopping.

I, like other mothers, want better for my child. I would like to guide him to better, healthier eating (and as a bonus I have even started eating some healthy home-made meals). I know there are organic, healthy baby foods out there. Lots. But that gets expensive! I chose to make our own because 1. it saves money 2. I know exactly what is in his food 3. I can make my own flavor combinations 4. it is easy to guide him into eating the same foods as us 5. I think store baby foods smell and look gross. If I wouldn't eat it, I don't expect him to.

By the way, I get not everyone has the time, or care, to go this route, so seriously please don't take any of this as a judgement if you buy your food. It's hard to find time to shower as a mom let alone cook (yes, I just admitted that I don't shower publicly). One of the biggest things I've learned becoming a mom is to not judge any one else's parenting. We all are doing our best to get by and do what works best for us. Just wanted to make sure that was said.

You only need a few things to get started.
-a food processor
We use one made for making baby food but that's not necessary
-a good baby food book
I use Top 100 Baby Purees (ugly cover, gorgeous pictures). I also hear great things about Super Baby Food as well. This will help be a guide to what can be frozen, what age they can have certain foods, and of course how to prepare them.
-a good knife
So helpful with all of the chopping you do.
-pots & a steamer/microwave-safe dish to steam
-ice cube tray & ziploc freezer bags /storage containers

Above is a peek at a few of the things we have in the freezer as an example of what you could puree. We also have mango, pear, strawberries, sweet potato, tilapia, & chicken.

There are also lots of foods that you can make that you don't even have to puree. You can mash up some banana or avocado. Or give them rice cereal, oatmeal, or yogurt. As they get older you will be able to dice some fruits into tiny pieces they can feed themselves or even give it to them whole as they get better at eating. Giving them something like a big piece of carrot to gnaw on is great for teething (note: I wouldn't recommend leaving them unattended with something like that though).

You'll obviously need to start with some good produce. You don't need to get all the different foods at once. We started out giving him one new food a week and started adding more slowly. As I notice something is running low I will just pick more up at the store that week and prepare it while cooking our dinner. I wouldn't recommend making a ton of one food at once though as purees are typically only good up to 6 weeks.

With most foods all you have to do is peel, chop and either boil or steam them until they are tender and then puree. You can add a few things to certain purees before you process them. For instance when they are starting out it's nice to mix in some breast-milk/formula for a familiar taste and a thinner consistency that's easier to eat. If it's breast-milk you can't re-freeze it or microwave it though, so keep that in mind. You can also add a little unsalted butter to things like carrots (cooking carrots with fat makes the beta-carotene absorb more readily) or sweet potato. Or a dash of cinnamon to apple or pear.
If you choose to use storage containers just put them pre-portioned into those and store. Keep in mind when portioning their food that you can not save anything that they don't eat once their spoon hits it. It's better to give them less and add if they seem hungry still than to waste a bunch of food.
It can be helpful to add the date you cooked it to ensure that you don't use food that is past the 6 week expiration date. Yes mine say things like "winner, winner, chicken dinner" and "show us your bleubs". I also add silly drawings if I'm feeling artsy. I'm a child with a child.
The great thing about storing his food this way is that I can then create my own combinations later on so that he isn't eating the same things all of the time. With the exception of apples & pears (his favorite) he rarely eats the same meal twice in a week. I swear sometimes his food is better than mine. I have a hard time not eating it and it makes me frown at my own cold dinner. One unexpected combination (from my book) that I found delicious is chicken, apple and sweet potato. Zachary loves it!
A few other "helpful" tips:
-Feed them after they have nursed/had their bottle. Food at this time is just for practice and they still need to have at least 18 to 20 oz. of milk a day. So, it's good to feed them that first to make sure that they aren't too full of food to have their milk.
- It's best to wait at least three days in between trying new foods to see if they are allergic.
-Microwave the frozen purees until they are piping hot and let cool. This will help kill bacteria.
I haven't done one of these in a while, but one of the Instagram prompts for the day was words and I thought it would be fun to do one again. This is one of my favorite quotes/lyrics of all time. I figured it would be appropriate given the upcoming Valentine's Day.
Sorry to keep this short but I've got to get back to editing a few sessions and a wedding while the little munchkin is asleep. I have a post coming up this week about making your own baby food and will be doing one on self-portraits soon. Feel free to let me know if there is a post/topic you'd like to see on here!Tenley Clarkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05693104988300734902noreply@blogger.com0
